Greg Stobbs N8GAS

Although I got my Novice license in 1969, I didn’t get a chance to use it because I immediately went off to Ohio State to study electrical engineering (excuses, excuses). After receiving my EE degree (specializing in antennas), I went on to law school. Today I am a retired patent attorney.

Back in 1994 (during the 13 wpm era), I got my General license but never actually got a radio until 2015, when I upgraded my license to Extra. Since that time I have been making up for lost time. I have completed WAS and DXCC and enjoy working DX, contesting, making antennas, operating QRP, and exploring all facets of ham radio. My favorite mode is CW.

The rather odd picture of me above—trying to stay out of the sun— is from a 2016 trip to Hawaii with Jim KB8TXZ and Doug N8VY to activate five national parks on the Big Island for the National Parks on the Air event. I got a taste there for what it’s like to be on the DX end of pileups. What a blast.

I have acquired intermediate level Japanese speaking and reading skills (still taking lessons every week). I’ve had a couple of brief QSOs with the JA’s using my second language but rag chewing in Japanese is not going to happen anytime soon.

You probably know I am currently serving as club secretary. I built the website you are now viewing and starting with the Summer edition, I will also be serving as editor of The 5 Watter. Please send me articles.
